[London] Réveiller son âme d'artiste à Eel Pie Island / Feeling like an artist at Eel Pie Island

You think you've seen everything in London? Craziness of people and things don't shock you anymore? You've clearly never been to Eel Pie Island!

Eel Pie Island is an island situated in Twickenham, not far from Richmond. It's populated by 120 people all year round but don't be fooled by its small size... Its name comes from the delicious eel pies the inhabitants would sell to the river traders. In his times, King Henry VIII was bringing his mistresses here and in 1830, Eel Pie Island Hotel was loved by tourists.

Rolling Stones, the Who, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Pink Floyd...

But it's in the 50's-60's that the island became well known. The hotel suddenly became a venue for jazz, blues and rock bands without a big notoriety. The Rolling Stones, the Who, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Pink Floyds... They all played there! Then in the 70's, the owner couldn't pay the necessary repairs and the hotel became the biggest hippy community in UK. Then a mysterious fire destroyed the place...

Since then, Eel Pie Island is a private island, ground of various artists. The bohemian charm is still there though. You walk along the little streets and you find crazy studios and workshops, wonderful stained glass, sculptures made of everything, tinsels full of colours... It's beautiful, it's weird, you feel like on another planet or just another time. A must-see island but be careful, it's only open twice a year in June and in December ! Take your time, stroll around and come back. You'll never discover all its secrets...
